ASH GRUNWALD

Ash Grunwald’s fifth studio album, HOT MAMA VIBES, is neck-deep in the technological swamp of the 21st Century. It's also the most primal concoction of elemental junkyard soul to stomp through your speakers this year.

"Mixing electronica with the blues was always a dream of mine," says Ash, now a 10-year veteran of live stages from Byron Bay Bluesfest to the Montreux Jazz Festival.

AZADOOTA

Azadoota was a favourite at the inaugural Snowy Mountains of Music in 2009 with their catchy Assyrian originals and accessible, dance-driven style. This year they return with one of the Arab world's top oud players, Ahmed Al-Karawi. Led by charismatic Iraqi singer Robin Zirwanda, the band fuses traditional Assyrian music with Arabic, Latin, Flamenco and Pop. Backed by pumping grooves and flamboyant percussion, oud maestro Ahmed challenges young Flamenco guitar hot-shot Chris Duff to a string duel, creating a synthesis of ancient and contemporary that reaches to the depths of the soul.

DOC JONES &
THE LECHERY ORCHESTRA

This is quirky original music for sure, with songs about the strangest and most evocative things – the Spanish Inquisition, a late night tango on the sawdust of a circus ring, and even a song about being a teapot! But, like a good film score, the music underpinning these strange tales will let listeners lose themselves in the story. Sometimes it is busy and as over the top as the words of the song, other times spacious and beautiful, but always leaving the listener intrigued and wondering what is coming next.
