3RD PERISHER SNOWY MOUNTAINS OF MUSIC FESTIVAL BIGGEST FESTIVAL YET!Bettina Richter 3RD PERISHER SNOWY MOUNTAINS OF MUSIC FESTIVAL BIGGEST FESTIVAL YET!
With 140 huge acts across 10 on-snow venues, an unparalleled audience of 5000 strong packing in tight and a spectacular snow cover of 43cm of snow on the ground, the 3rd Perisher Snowy Mountains of Music festival was the biggest Snowies Festival ever. Ash Grunwald opened the festival with a bang on opening night Friday 10th June at Smiggins and was introduced to the stage by none other than Speed Skating Olympic Legend Steven Bradbury. With lots of fresh snow to take in some artists like Ash displayed their ability to play it cool on the slopes as well as the stage whilst inside artists pumped out the music across the resort until late into the night. Saturday night saw new festival venue The Perisher Manor drawing the big crowds with Melbourne darlings Skipping Girl Vinegar and a wild Dallas Frasca cranking out the music late with a big party atmosphere with crowded dance floors, fire spinning and snow revelry outside. On Sunday in the recovery room you could chill and get warm and intimate with some down-to-earth acoustic over at Bazil’s Bar with The April Maze, Big Erle, Heath Cullen and the 45, The Stiff Gins or head up to the Sundeck for some live poetry for the Snowy Poetry Cup. Sunday night was once again one of the biggest nights of the festival with people coming from near and far to see Christine Anu perform her classic sound for one night only of the festival, on the Smiggins Stage. Festival-goers partied till late over at Smiggins with African music in the snow sending love peace and powder late into the night with Afro Mandinko. For kids it was the best holiday ever, with a dedicated kids stage with festival artists doing special shows, drumming and didj workshops, a jumping castle, face painting and a free ride on the Perisher Quad Express. For those with ways with words, the poetry program was bigger than ever with outstanding entries from all over Australia as well as New Zealand. The Broken Ski Award went to Carol Heuchan from regional NSW for her poem Trails and the Junior Poetry section was won by Jake Taylor-Friend from Jindabyne. The Snowy Poetry Cup – the festival’s live poetry slam - was won by Festival Soundo Sam Martin from Candelo. The success of this year’s festival was thanks to the hard-work, sweat and tears from the festival core team and couldn’t have been possible without the enthusiastic hard-work of over 60 volunteers who came from all over Australia to be part of the Perisher Snowy Mountains of Music festival. The festival would also like to thank major sponsors the Perisher Resort Chamber of Commerce, Perisher, NPWS, WIN Television and the Australian Government Indigenous Cultural Program and Snowy Mountains Tourism for their fantastic support.
